Memory
"Memory" is a documentary about the extraordinary story of two Cypriots. Of Fethi Akinci, a Turkish Cypriot and Yiannis Maratheftis, a Greek Cypriot. The two fought against each other during the 1974 war at the Lefka front. For decades Fethi had the haunting belief that on the battlefield he had shot and killed his Greek Cypriot counterpart. A Turkish translation of Panicos Neocleous's book "Ignored 1974" fell in Fethi's hands. There he read the account of Maratheftis, and quickly realized that his supposed war casualty was alive. The two men met. Since, they have become brotherly friends and have jointly spoken for peace at many public meetings. Yiannis and Fethi through their story take us into the hard realities of war to teach us reconciliation.

During the history of cinema, there were many films that depicted the brutal reality of war. This year, on the sixth film festival of Cyprus there were five films that depict the cruelty of war through the eyes of child heroes. Five disparate concepts as each other yet so intimately linked to the global history of humanity. Five different films with five different endings for the young actors, take us to truth, pain but also bring us hope for a better world.
